New Year’s resolutions are a common pastime these days. As soon as the calendar flips to another new year, people just like you and me commit themselves to lofty aspirations with no real actionable plan or target in mind. Maybe it’s to lose weight, get organized, spend less and save more, or learn a new skill. While well-intentioned, these resolutions often fall short within a matter of weeks. What we need to do, especially if we want to live a more pain-free life through chiropractic care in 2021, is to focus on setting goals.

What’s the difference between goals and resolutions?

Resolutions are decisions we make to do or not do something. They traditionally revolve around changing an undesired trait or behavior, improve our life in some way, or to continue good practices. There’s no planning involved. We just commit ourselves:

  • I’m going to exercise and eat healthy.
  • My resolution is to treat the people around me better.
  • I’m going to quit smoking.

The problem with resolutions is that we typically don’t keep them. And why? Because there isn’t anything holding us to them. If you look at the examples above, they are pretty vague. So it’s easy to walk away, lose focus, or get discouraged.

Goals are specific, realistic, actionable, and can be broken down into attainable chunks that lead us to a specific result.

  • I’m going to commit myself to visit my chiropractor twice a week.
  • My goal is to drink at least 5 glasses of water a day for the rest of the year.
  • I’m going to build at least 30 minutes of “me time” into every workday to reduce stress.
